A Look At Gender Inequality In Film

Despite making up 50.8 percent of the U.S. population, women are vastly underrepresented in Hollywood. You already know that men in the film industry get paid more than woman, and you've probably heard that men outnumber women both in front and behind the camera. But the extent to which this is the case is sobering.

Women purchase half of all movie tickets sold in the U.S.


Females are more likely to be depicted in a stereotypical or hyper sexualized manner
26.2% of female characters in all films from 2007-2012 were nude or partially nude

Among the top 250 grossing films women made up:

Women only directed 17 of the 250 top-grossing films

Among the 100 top-grossing films, only 21 films featured a female lead or co-lead.

Forbes 2013 list of the highest paid actresses made a collection $181 million versus $461 million made collectively by the top ten male actors 

of Oscar voters are male

In Academy Award history, only 4 female have been nominated for Best Director. Kathryn Bigelow is the only one that has won.

In 85 years, only 7 women have won for Best Picture
In 85 years only 8 women have won for Best Adapted Screenplay 
In 73 years only 8 women have won for Best Original Screenplay
In 2013 (85th Academy Awards) there were NO female nominees for Directing, Cinematography, Film Editing, Screenwriting (Original Screenplay) or Music (original score).
